ZAMBIA Seed Company (ZAMSEED) Limited says good accessible roads to rural areas plays a vital role in promoting productivity among small-scale farmers.
Company regional sales manager Nokuthula Ndhlovu said some rural areas in the country are not accessible due to poor roads thereby hindering most farmers from accessing inputs.
Ms Ndhlovu was speaking in an interview in Lusaka on Tuesday.
“I have extensively travelled to rural areas and some of the areas are not reachable by road.
It is really sad when farmers in these vast areas are really looking forward to put up their best in terms of maize production but the roads are not actually accessible,” she said.
On seed stocks, Ms Ndhlovu said the company has enough seeds to supply both the local and international markets.
She said ZAMSEED has already started supplying local farmers and has exported some of the seed to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.
Ms Ndhlovu also urged small-scale farmers to have their inputs ready for planting and should consider sowing their seed early to achieve good yields.
She advised farmers to use hybrid seed to increase their expected yields.
She said ZAMSEED has a variety of seeds which are suitable for farmers’ productivity.
“Take for instance our ZMS 606 hybrid seed, the expected yield is about eight metric tonnes .With the few challenges that farmers may face, they will comfortably be sitting at six metric tonnes which is not very bad,” she said.
