New Dawn puts foot down over substandard road works

MINISTER of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Charles Milupi says Government will not tolerate sub-standard road works by contractors and consultants.

He said this at the launch of the Road Development Agency (RDA) 2022-2026 strategic plan yesterday.

The strategic plan is anchored on three themes – road asset maintenance, infrastructure development and good corporate governance.

It spells out various strategic objectives which, in due course, will help RDA to reposition and subsequently trigger growth in the road sector.

Among objectives is improving road infrastructure maintenance, improving management systems, enhancing financial management and resource mobilisation, increasing human resource capacity and improving the work environment.

On the whole, the strategic plan visualises an accessible, well-maintained and fit-for-purpose road network in Zambia that will propel socio-economic development.

Mr Milupi, an engineer, said Government is concerned about the quality of some roads built in the country in the past. He noted that there have been instances where some roads have been constructed at a high cost but of poor quality.
