MINISTER of Education Douglas Syakalima has pardoned 18 University of Zambia (UNZA) students who were suspended and expelled in relation to the September riot at the Great East Road campus.
After successful pleas by the parents and guardians of the respective guilty offenders, Mr Syakalima announced a reprieve for them, but with some counsel.
“The damage was immense in the last 10 years. You lose a country if you take politics in a school system,” he told the crestfallen students and their parents and guardians at his office yesterday.
Mr Syakalima said a university is a citadel of knowledge and thinking, and its students should project excellence everywhere.
He told the parents and the students that there should be no more politics in the country’s school system.
Mr Syakalima wondered how students could be enticed with little money to riot when Government is paying their meal allowances.
