LEVY Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital has been reserved as a referral hospital for surviving cholera patients diagnosed with other complicated diseases.
And Trade Kings Foundation has donated hygiene items worth K2.5 million to Heroes Stadium, which is the national cholera centre.
In receiving the donation, Minister of Health Sylvia Masebo said surviving patients such as babies with malnutrition, heavily pregnant mothers and those diagnosed with high blood pressure and diabetes and have not been receiving treatment are all being sent to Levy Mwanawasa for specialised treatment.
“We have maintained Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital as a referral centre of complicated cases or indeed if somebody has another ailment other than cholera,” she said.
“So when we finish treating patients for cholera, we then transfer that patient to Levy Mwanawasa if that patient has other diseases. For example, we have babies that are suffering from malnutrition, we have mothers that are heavily pregnant for example, we refer them for those pregnancy issues.”
Ms Masebo announced that 25 people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours, with Heroes recording six deaths, among them a child.
“Lusaka continues to be the epicentre of this disease and so even as we talk about national, the fact of the matter remains that it is here in Lusaka where the problem is and it is Lusaka that is exporting to the other districts,” she said.
“So as of Tuesday (yesterday), in the last 24 hours, we have 727 patients currently here at the main centre and we lost six here at the main centre, of which one was a young child, the rest were adults.
