GOVERNMENT will today start dispensing the 1.4 million doses of the oral vaccines that have been received so far to help fight the cholera outbreak.
While the immunity period or efficacy of the vaccines is two years, the public is being urged to continue adhering to the preventive measures.
The vaccines will be administered in selected areas of Lusaka.
At the handover of the 1.4 million doses out of the expected 1.7 million doses of oral cholera vaccines to Minister of Health Sylvia Masebo in Lusaka yesterday, United Nations acting Resident Coordinator Cissy Kabasuuga said the world body is committed to supporting Zambia get through this cholera crisis.
“We note that there is need for long-term solutions such as ensuring proper hygiene and provision of safe water and adequate sanitation in communities,” she said. “We need to address the root causes of why it keeps recurring. We propose that no new unplanned settlements should be allowed and existing ones should be upgraded, and where not possible, consider relocating people to other areas. This requires a multisectoral approach, and through collaborative efforts, we can make cholera a disease of the past.”..https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
