FORMER national team coach Sven Vandenbroeck says the Chipolopolo are on the right track despite their early elimination from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) finals in Ivory Coast.
Vandenbroeck said during an interview with Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation on Saturday that the Chipolopolo played well and could become stronger if the players can be together for many years.
He said the organisation of the team on the pitch was good and the defence was coordinated.
“I think it was positive, to be honest. For a long time they were not qualifying for AfCON and now they were at the biggest stage. They drew two matches against Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Tanzania but it was not easy,” Vandenbroeck said.
The Belgian said the Chipolopolo could have qualified to the last 16 as runners-up in Group F had they beaten Tanzania in a match that ended 1-1.
“Maybe they could have been second but maybe the red card against Tanzania killed their ambitions. Had they won against Tanzania, they could have qualified, even a draw with Morocco would have been enough as one of the best losers and Ivory Coast would have been eliminated,” he said.
