THE Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has engaged potential suppliers of electricity equipment to support an innovation by a youth of Manyinga who has developed a simple mini-hydro power plant on Manyinga River.
The inventor, Abel Mivanga, 29, of Kaluyi village under Senior Chief Sikufele, has built a mini-hydro power plant which generates 24 volts of power, which is stepped up to 220 volts to power various electric appliances in his house.
Video of Mr Mivanga’s invention went viral last year, prompting REA officials to visit the plant in October to appreciate the innovation.REA chief executive officer Linus Chanda said the authority wants to provide equipment for Mr Mivanga’s project to ensure the installation is safe.
Mr Chanda said in an interview that this is also aimed at providing the required safety measures and governance structures to enable him to become an electricity supplier.
