Girl, 11, loses part of buttock after beating

AN 11-YEAR-OLD Grade Five pupil at Muchabi Primary School in Mumbwa has lost part of her left buttock after it became septic following a beating by two members of a neighbourhood watch team for allegedly stealing K900 belonging to a village banking group.

Choma ward councillor Debbie Chilombe told Sunday Mail that the mother failed to take the girl to the clinic resulting in the wound rotting. Some pictures of the girl shared by Mr Chilombe show a relatively deep and big sore on the left lower buttock covered in pus.

“The girl was badly beaten by members of the neighbourhood watch team after her guardian reported that she stole a money box containing K900. The girl was staying with Sharon Masumo, a neighbour to the girl’s mother who was keeping the money box. Mrs Masumo had asked to be staying with the girl from her mother.

“The day the money box disappeared, Mrs Masumo went to Lusaka while her husband, Webster Masumo, who works for ZAWA, went for patrols. When she returned, Mrs Masumo noticed that the money box was missing and informed the girl’s mother,” he said.

Muchabi Primary School head teacher David Unyenya condemned the act, calling it barbaric. He said the girl was beaten using a stick and shovel.
