PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has challenged farmers to ensure the country produces its target of 10 million metric tons (mt) of maize despite the dry spell that has characterised the agriculture season.
Speaking in Mkushi yesterday where he launched the early harvesting of maize, the President said farmers should work hard and ensure that the target is achieved despite issues of climate change.
The President said the 146,000mt of early maize to be harvested by some contracted farmers in Mkushi is a significant boost to alleviate the challenges caused by drought.
“We need to ensure that maize is available to consumers not only in July but as early as March, and I want to thank the farmers who responded positively to calls to engage in early maize production,” he said.
“The over 146,000mt we expect to harvest from this production will help the country during this unprecedented time of the worst drought experienced in Zambia.”…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/
