TO AVERT challenges being encountered in the agriculture sector, especially in Southern Province, an initiative called Atwaambe will support 80 farmers in Choma district to grow the munsangu tree under a US$42,000 project funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Musangu is a beneficial tree with a mature plant capable of producing up to 300 kilogrammes (kg) of fertiliser and 250kg of lime.
Crops grown under the shade of the munsangu benefit from its annual leaf fall which fertilises the soil and counteracts soil acidity.
The project will be implemented as a year pilot in Chief Cooma’s area.
Speaking when he called on Chief Cooma, Atwaambe Initiative interim chairperson Albert Mwiinga said the organisation believes in providing a platform where farmers and experts interact for the growth of farming.
“This is a response to climatic changes that we are seeing, to try and come up with innovations that will help the farmers to remain resilient and productive,” he said.
And Chief Cooma welcomed the project, saying he has the munsangu tree in his field, which has enabled him to have good yields despite the drought…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/
