A WOMAN of Lusaka’s Chilenje South has sued a police officer who allegedly detained her for a day in a filthy cell, while pregnant, and later released her from Northmead Police Station because of mistaken identity.
Idah Banda wants the Lusaka High Court to order the State to pay her damages for wrongful arrest and imprisonment after earlier demanding K300,000 compensation in a letter.
Ms Banda complains that the arresting officer, Caleb Zulu, unlawful detained her, an ordeal which left her traumatised.
In the court documents, Ms Banda has cited Mr Zulu, a cop at Northmead Police Station, as first defendant, while the Attorney General is the second defendant.
On May 29, 2023, around 17:00 hours, Mr Zulu detained the plaintiff and charged her with forgery and making of false documents, allegations she denied committing.
Ms Banda, who was about seven months pregnant at the time, adds that after being charged, she was placed in Northmead Police Station cells, which were contaminated with human waste and urine.
“The plaintiff was detained and deprived of her liberty for a period of about 24 hours and the first defendant is liable to the plaintiff in respect of such imprisonment,” she adds…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/
