A TOTAL of 106 players from 16 countries will compete in the US$5,000 (about K130,000)-rich Gatbro Zambia International Badminton Championship getting underway in Lusaka tomorrow.
The tournament will run from November 14-17 at OYDC Sports Development Centre.
Badminton Association of Zambia (BAZ) president Kingsley Mulenga said in an interview yesterday that players are from Azerbaijan, Botswana, Canada, Ghana, India, Israel, Kazakhstan and Luxembourg.
The rest are from Maldives, Morta, Myanmar, South Africa, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Zimbabwe and hosts Zambia.
Mulenga said Zambia will be represented by 16 players, among them Kalombo Mulenga, his brother Chongo, Rodrick Mwansa, Timothy Kafunda and Ajuma Adjesh, the 2023 Africa Schools gold medallist.
The tournament will feature five categories – men’s singles, women singles, men’s doubles, ladies doubles and mixed doubles.
“Many thanks to Gatbro, who has sponsored this event with the tournament’s prize money of US$5,000, which will be shared among the winners,” Mulenga said.
“Foreign players will start arriving on Tuesday (yesterday) and will be lodged at Golden Peacock Hotel.”
Mulenga said they expect local players to reach the medal brackets.
