POLICE in Chipata have detained eight Socialist Party (SP) cadres who were allegedly found with weapons, among them axes and pepper spray, just before voting opened in the Dilika Ward by-election yesterday.
Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba said acting on a tip, they ambushed the cadres at their den in Magwero area, about 15km from the central business district.
Suspected SP cadres on Sunday allegedly stoned a motor vehicle belonging to United Party for National Development (UPND) Eastern Province youth chairperson Lyson Nyirenda in Dilika Ward.
The suspected cadres are all believed to be from Lusaka and only travelled to Chipata for the by-election.
