Lightning kills dad, mum, daughter, son

FOUR family members have died after being struck by lightning in Chifunabuli, Luapula Province.

The four – father, mother, daughter and son – were struck while sheltering from rain in a makeshift thatched house at a fishing camp on Lake Chifunabuli.

ZANIS said Chifunabuli District Commissioner Stanley Mukosa has confirmed the incident, which happened on Tuesday around 17:40 hours.

“I can confirm that four people from the same family from Kafwimbi village, Masanta area, in Senior Chief Mwewa’s chiefdom have died after being struck by lightning and burning them to death during a heavy downpour,” Mr Mukosa said.

He named them as the father Oscar Chishala, 39, his wife Mary, 30, daughter Pauline, 11, and son Oscar, who was aged 18 months old.

Meanwhile, the Kitwe fire brigade has retrieved the body of an eight-year-old girl who drowned in the crocodile-infested Kafue River on Wednesday while swimming with friends as they were waiting to view the cold box unit abnormal load on its way to Kansanshi mine in Solwezi.

Kitwe City Council (KCC) public relations manager Mwaka Nakweti confirmed in a statement yesterday that Agness Bunda’s body was retrieved from the river near Twin Bridge Lodge around midday.

“The search for Agness Bunda, the eight-year old girl who drowned in the Kafue River yesterday (Wednesday), has come to a tragic conclusion,” she said.
