SEC warns against online investment schemes

SECURITIES and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cautioned the public to be wary of online-related investment schemes that expose them to a high risk of losing their money.SEC is this year expected to roll out a scam awareness campaign aimed at promoting trust and confidence in the market.
Speaking during a town hall meeting aimed at educating the public on how to identify and avoid frauds and scams, SEC product development and market research officer Sitali Mugala said scammers are using social media to prey on people because the platform has a wide reach.
Ms Mugala said people should be careful with misleading or fake opportunities that entice them to invest in products with no underlying assets.
“The moment they ask you to recruit people, just know there is a problem,” she said.
