A MAN of Lusaka’s Misisi who earns a living operating a wheelbarrow has been ordered to pay K3,000 to his sister-in-law as compensation for hitting her with a broken Black Label bottle, which left her with injuries.
Lusaka magistrate Mutinta Mwenya warned Steven Chirwa that failure to pay the money within a week will attract an 18 months jail term.
“You will remain in prison until the money is paid,” magistrate Mwenya said while noting that the K3,000 is not even enough compensation for the permanent scars on the victim, Janet Phiri.Chirwa, 36, earlier pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding Janet on January 1, 2024.
Clad in a yellow T-shirt inscribed with words, ‘Smooth as Tennessee Whiskey’, the accused claimed he was drunk at the time he committed the offence.
Facts read by State advocate Malama Chisenga were that on material day around 08:00 hours, Janet was celebrating New Year with her sister, Grace, at her house in Misisi.
“Around 10:00, her brotherin-law [Chirwa] went to her house looking for his wife, Diana Phiri. The complainant [Janet] told him she [Diana] was not there as she had slept at a funeral house.”
But Chirwa started insulting Janet, calling her a dog before leaving her residence…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
