PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says suspension of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) programmes globally by the Trump administration is long overdue and a wake-up call for African countries to grow their economies by enhancing bilateral trade and investment among themselves.
The head of State says the development also calls for prudent management of resources.
He notes that socio-economic growth can only be attained with increased investment, trade and transaction among African countries.
President Hichilema said this when he held a bilateral meeting with UNAIDS executive director and under-secretary general for the United Nations Winnie Byanyima on the sidelines of the just-ended 38th session of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This is according to a news item monitored on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation last evening.
Mr Hichilema used the meeting to welcome United States President Donald Trump’s order to freeze funding to all UNAIDS programmes.
President Trump has called for the closure of USAID citing unprecedented levels of corruption.
“It is long overdue, it is actually long overdue because it underscores the importance of us on the continent growing our economies, focusing on growth, growth and more growth,” President Hichilema said.
