A TEST conducted on water from Mwambashi Stream in Kalulushi district on the Copperbelt has revealed high levels of contamination.
Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSSC) conducted the test after a farmer last week reported that the water in the stream had turned into a bluish colour.
Zambia Management and Environmental Agency (ZEMA) says it is investigating the case to establish the mining firm behind the pollution of the stream.
The situation prompted the water utility to carry out a test in ascertaining what triggered the change in the appearance of the colour.
According to the test result, the water was found to be highly contaminated, thus posing a risk to the farmers who rely on the water from the stream for irrigating their farms.
Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation principal public relations officer Prince Chiyuni said in an interview that according to information obtained from NWSSC, the tests came out positive for contamination.
Mr Chiyuni said his ministry has since directed the water utility, Water Resource Management Authority (WARMA) and National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) to work together in addressing the matter…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
