Met Dept warns of flash floods

THE Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) has issued a warning for flash floods in various districts, which include Lusaka, Choma, Livingstone, Chipata and Kafue.
The warning comes after a forecast of continuous rainfall for the next 48 hours which is likely to cause flash floods, flooding and water-logging.
Other districts named are Mumbwa, Shangombo, Mazabuka, Luano, Luangwa, Rufunsa, Mulobezi, Sioma, Mwandi, Namwala and Petauke.
The department also warned of flooding in some districts in the northern part of the country such as Mpika, Chembe, Nchelenge, Kaputa, Kawambwa, Mansa, Samfya, Solwezi, Mwinilunga, Kasama, Nakonde, Mporokoso, Mwense, Luwingu, Senanga and Katete,
In the weather advisory, the department warned residents to avoid crossing rivers, streams and flooded areas or driving during heavy rains.
ZMD senior meteorologist Peggy Thole said in an interview that the country has so far received sufficient rainfall in most parts.
Ms Thole said moist airflow from the Democratic Republic of Congo is covering most parts of Zambia, leading to widespread rainfall.
“The soil moisture is also sufficient in most parts of the country,” she said.
