INTERNATIONAL Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Africa General Secretary Joel Akhator Odigie has urged Zambia’s creditors to swiftly prioritise and execute the restructuring of the country’s debt which is vital for protecting its citizens’ fundamental human rights and well-being.
And ITUC-Africa has challenged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to consider reforms that prioritise human-centric fiscal management aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of debt distress on workers and the general citizenry.
In a paper titled ‘A call for the Urgent Restructuring of Africa’s Debt to Safeguard Socioeconomic Rights and Ensure Economic Stability: A focus on Zambia’, Mr Odigie said events in Zambia have compelled ITUC-Africa to make this call and to request that the Zambian case be given good attention.
He said like many African nations, Zambia grapples with a constricting web of debt that significantly limits its fiscal flexibility.
