GOVERNMENT says the coming of a United Arab Emirates (UAE) firm, International Resources Holding (IRH), as a strategic partner of Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) has seen improvements like increased job opportunities from 10,765 to 12,684 employees as of last month.
Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe yesterday gave a comprehensive ministerial statement in Parliament on the latest developments in the mining sector.
Mr Kabuswe said mining in Zambia is undergoing a significant transformation that is driven by a series of policy reforms, strategic investments and exploration activities.
He said an invigorated Mopani is emerging as Zambia’s first technologically advanced underground mine
“In terms of supplier engagement, 82 percent of the 1,089 total suppliers of goods and services to Mopani are local Zambians,” Mr Kabuswe, who is Chililabombwe Member of Parliament (MP), said.
“Other improvements Mopani has also made are in its production such as the copper grade from 1.68 percent to 2.21 percent.”
