PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says his administration is targeting to set economic growth rate consistently at six percent every year and avoid sharp declines in future even with change of government.
Speaking in Lusaka yesterday when he launched the Oxford handbook on the Zambian economy, the President said sustained economic growth of at least six percent should not be altered so that whichever political party comes has a minimum to start from.
“We will get there, work does not kill,” he said. “We need economic policies that cannot be changed anyhow even after change of government, with hard work and prudence.
“Our focus now is the economy, investment and trade and grow. I think we need a paradigm shift. We want to move from process based to focus more on outcomes and
deliverables by achieving targets.”
The President called for change in mindset and attitude towards work by all, including at cabinet and permanent secretary level.
“You appoint senior government official today, be it minister or PS or others, the next day they are looking for a brand new VX motor vehicle when the former office-holder left a one-year-old vehicle. We had to stop this,” he said.
