RULING United Party for National Development (UPND) secretary general Batuke Imenda has described the three ward by-election victories recorded on Tuesday as a landmark considering that they were in areas previously considered non-traditional territories.
UPND won the local government by-elections in Iyaya (Mungwi, Northern Province), Dilika (Chipata, Eastern Province) and Kalwanyembe (Mumbwa, Central Province).
“This is a landmark victory considering the fact the elections were taking place in areas previously considered to be non-traditional territories,” Mr Imenda said.
All 11 Chipata City Council councillors were Patriotic Front (PF) members but will now be joined by UPND’s Lewis Zulu, who will be replacing Florence Jere, who recently resigned.
