THE Socialist Party (SP) was thrown into panic mode when its preferred candidate for the Kawambwa Central parliamentary seat Ivo Mpasa resigned to join the ruling UPND barely hours before nominations opened.

But the party leadership put up a brave front.

“We did not struggle despite the incident being disturbing,” SP Luapula Province spokesperson Innocent Kapwepwe said.

“We just quickly got back to our members and picked Kennedy Kapambwe as our candidate for this election.”

Mr Kapambwe was third to lodge his nomination yesterday, with the first being the candidate for the Tonse Alliance Danstan Mwansa, who is standing on the New Congress Party (NCP) ticket.

There was a scare too for the alliance when returning officer Golden Siwila produced a different list of office bearers from the Registrar of Societies which had the late Cosmas Mwale as president instead of the current Peter Chanda.

The incident brought the nomination process to a standstill but it was resolved and the candidate was allowed to file.
