KITWE City Council (KCC)has suspended operations at G&G Bakery in Riverside for allegedly failing to adhere
to public health and safety standards.
KCC public relations manager Mwaka Nakweti said in a statement yesterday that the local authority has taken the step following
inspections that revealed gross violations of public health and safety standards.
“An initial inspection conducted on 8 October 2024 under the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019, the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 2010, the Public Health Act Cap 295, and the Solid Waste Regulation and Management Act No. 20 of 2018 uncovered several alarming issues,” Ms Nakweti said.
Public health inspectors found that employees had no personal protective equipment (PPE) and had poor knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.
Inspectors also established that the bakery used unsanitary machinery and equipment and had inadequate sanitary facilities.
“Authorised officers were also barred and obstructed from inspecting other areas of the bakery on the same premises, which goes against the Food and Safety Act No. 7 of 2019,” she said.
Ms Nakweti said despite receiving recommendations to address issues raised by inspectors, G&G Bakery failed to comply.
“In light of the bakery’s continued non-compliance, Kitwe City Council has resolved to close and suspend operations at G&G Bakery to protect public health and safety,” she said.
