ACCORDING to recent statistics, nearly 600 million Africans, representing half of the continent’s population, live without electricity.
This staggering figure accounts for 83 percent of the global electricity access deficit.
To address this challenge, the World Bank Group, African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and other partners have launched an ambitious initiative known as Mission 300.
The initiative aims to provide electricity access to 300 million people across the continent by 2030, through a combination of increased infrastructure investments and sweeping policy reforms.
AfDB president Akinwumi Adesina emphasised the transformative power of electricity in driving development.
“Access to electricity is not just about power – it’s about creating jobs, improving healthcare, and fostering education. Mission 300 represents a bold step towards lighting up and powering Africa,” Dr Adesina said.
