ENGINEERING Institution of Zambia (EIZ) has launched an urgent investigation into the tailing dam incident at Sino Metals in Chambishi, which resulted in the spillage of acidic mine effluent into the Kafue River and surrounding farmlands.
The investigation aims to identify lapses in engineering standards and propose long-term measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
And Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSSC) yesterday gradually started supplying water to Kitwe residents from its Nkana East treatment plant.
EIZ president Wesley Kaluba regrets the incident, emphasising that negligence in engineering projects can lead to severe consequences, including loss of life and environmental degradation.
“We are saddened at the level of negligence by the said mine, which has resulted in a life-threatening situation.
Engineering is a profession that demands extreme professionalism, and if proper procedures are not followed, it may lead to loss of life and property,” Mr Kaluba said…
