This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the emerald mine and the two higher learning institutions for eight years.
Kagem Mine head of corporate responsibility Lomthunzi Mbewe said in an interview that the firm is sponsoring the nine vulnerable students to study under the school of mines at the two tertiary institutions.
Ms Mbewe said the beneficiaries are pursuing courses in geology and mining engineering.
She said this is to ensure the mining sector has more skilled and competent personnel.
